A new Fe-C-Si-Mn-Cr steel has been discovered with strength exceeding 1 GPa due to a bainitic microstructure formed during a 24 hour anneal at 200 C. We will establish the austenite to bainite transformation kinetics by in-situ XRD. Two alloys will be examined, one with alloying elements designed to accelerate the transformation. 2. Recent in-situ XRD experiments in a Duplex steel weld showed a reversible ferrite to austenite transformation on heating, with a transformation rate much faster than accounted for by diffusion models. Previous measurements did not include accurate thermometry and did not account for the effects of texture on volume fraction. We will track the kinetics of the bcc-fcc-bcc transformation for 4 samples while monitoring texture with the CCD detector. equipment_required: Resistive sample heater can mount on large Huber.
