ASAXS is necessary to isolate the gamma prime population from the other precipitation such as grain-boundary carbides. Commercial Ni-base superalloys, such as Waspaloy, used in aircraft engines, have found use in high temperature applications for a number of years due to the effects of a fine dispersion of coherent gamma prime intermetallic precipitates such as Ni3Al. Stability of these alloys at operating temperature is a key concern. We will then correlate our ASAXS determinations of size, shape and distribution of all phases present with complementary electrical characterization measurements and microscopy performed at Georgia Tech. All of these techniques were chosen because, together, they have the potential to provide statistically significant results that could then be used to develop structure-property correlations that will spawn better understanding of the kinetics of degradation in this important class of structural materials.
