The proposed experiments will make use of the USAXS setup which is currently installed. Stuart Stock (Institute for Bioengineering and Nanoscience in Advanced Medicine, Northwestern Univ., Chicago, IL) wants to study, in collaboration with Jan Ilavsky, the process of cleaning the sea urchin teeth for biological study. This USAXS study is part of a larger complementary studies program. See, for example: http://www.future.aps.anl.gov/Future/Workshops/Using_Xray_Imaging/Slides/stock.pdf Jan also has some single crystal aluminum samples to investigate. Both of these sets of samples would be best measured at the 11 keV, where the instrument will be tuned at the beginning of this period. Vijay Tirumala, APS, would like to measure the radius of gyration in semidilute polymer solutions based on poly (N-isopropylacrylamide). The next scheduled USAXS user wants to operate with 7 keV X-rays. It is proposed that the beam line will be tuned to that energy for the measurement of the semidilute polymer solutions on Sunday afternoon to allow the beam line optics to stabilize to the heat load conditions of 7 keV operations.He writes: ------------------------------- Polymerization will be undertaken in colloidal gold solution, with three different particle sizes ca. 5 nm, 20 nm, and 40 nm. Since the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAm chains is dependent upon the strength of their hydrogen bonding with water and it's constituents, I hope to see their representative effects in phase transition and hysteresis. PNIPAm is not considered hazardous nor is it reactive. I would just put 1 or 2 for health and 0 for fire & reactivity.
